Half-day Accessibility Strategy Workshop
This half day strategy workshop helps de-mystify accessibility for product, platform, and organizational leaders who make strategy, design, procurement, and program decisions. Participants leave with a working understanding of who is impacted, the standards and laws that apply, and a practical roadmap for building or maturing an accessibility program inside their organization.

Learning objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the business, legal, and ethical case for accessibility to their executive team and board.
- Distinguish between the major standards (WCAG, EN 301 549, PDF/UA, platform mobile guidance) and the laws and regulations that reference them (ADA Title II and III, Section 508, EAA, AODA, EU Web Accessibility Directive, and others).
- Read and evaluate an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR / VPAT) for procurement decisions.
- Honestly assess their organization’s current accessibility maturity against an industry framework.
- Outline the program elements — sponsorship, policy, roles, lifecycle integration, procurement, training, governance, and measurement — required to sustain accessibility over time.
- Walk away with a 30/60/90-day roadmap adapted to their own organization.
What is Accessibility?
Explain the common categories of disability — visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, speech, and situational — and how each affects the way people interact with software, hardware, and the physical world. Walk through the adaptive technologies people rely on, including screen readers, screen magnifiers, switch access, voice control, captions, alternative input devices, and built-in OS accessibility features on desktop and mobile. Show concrete examples of how poorly built digital products break these technologies, and how thoughtful design removes those barriers. Discuss the business case: market reach, brand and reputation, employee inclusion, legal risk, and the well-documented quality and innovation benefits that accessible products deliver.
Understanding Standards, Guidelines, and Legislation
A practical tour of the rules that govern digital accessibility and how they fit together, so leaders can speak the language and make informed scoping decisions.
- Web standards — W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2; how Principles, Guidelines, Success Criteria, and conformance levels (A, AA, AAA) work; what is changing in WCAG 3.0; and ARIA / WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices for rich web applications.
- Mobile accessibility — how WCAG applies to native mobile apps, plus platform-specific guidance from Apple (iOS Human Interface Guidelines, UIAccessibility) and Google (Android Accessibility, TalkBack), and the BBC Mobile Accessibility Guidelines as a practical reference.
- Document accessibility — PDF/UA (ISO 14289), accessible Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel authoring, accessible EPUB, and how WCAG maps to document content.
- Other technical standards — EN 301 549 (the European harmonized standard covering web, mobile, software, hardware, and documentation), ISO/IEC 30071-1 for embedding accessibility into the development lifecycle, and the U.S. Revised 508 Standards.
- Legislation and regulation — ADA Title II (state and local government, including the 2024 DOJ web and mobile rule) and Title III (places of public accommodation); Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for U.S. federal agencies and contractors; the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and its 2025 enforcement deadline; the UK Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations; Canada’s ACA and AODA; Australia’s DDA; and how each of these references or builds on WCAG.
- Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACR / VPAT) — what an ACR actually is, how to read one, how the ITI VPAT template aligns with WCAG, Section 508, and EN 301 549, what “Supports / Partially Supports / Does Not Support” really mean, and how to use ACRs in procurement and vendor evaluation.
Building and Maturing an Accessibility Program
For leaders who are either standing up a new accessibility program or looking to level up an existing one. This section translates standards and legislation into an organizational operating model.
- Why a program, not a project — the difference between one-off remediation and sustainable accessibility, and the cost curve of fixing issues late versus building them in.
- Maturity models — using frameworks such as the W3C Accessibility Maturity Model and the Business Disability Forum / BIF capability models to honestly assess where your organization is across dimensions like leadership, culture, knowledge and skills, process integration, procurement, communications, and user experience research.
- Program foundations — executive sponsorship and accountability; an accessibility policy and public statement; a centralized Center of Excellence vs. federated champions model; roles and responsibilities across product, design, engineering, QA, content, legal, HR, and procurement.
- Embedding accessibility in the lifecycle — accessibility requirements in product definition, inclusive design practices, design system and component-library accessibility, developer enablement and tooling, automated and manual testing strategy, assistive-technology testing, and release gates.
- Accessible procurement — building accessibility into RFPs and vendor contracts, requesting and evaluating ACRs/VPATs, defining acceptance criteria, and managing third-party and open-source risk.
- People and culture — training pathways for designers, developers, content authors, PMs, and executives; hiring and partnering with people with disabilities; employee resource groups; and embedding lived experience into research.
- Measurement and governance — defining KPIs and OKRs for accessibility, dashboards and reporting cadence, issue triage and SLAs, audit and conformance strategy, handling user feedback and complaints, and preparing for regulatory inquiries.
- Roadmap and next steps — a practical 30/60/90-day plan participants can adapt to their own organization, plus an honest discussion of common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
